Letter to the editor:

Bush-Cheney damage already apparent

Tue, Jun 10, 2008 (2:03 a.m.)

President Bush will soon take his “Grand Farewell Tour,” beginning with a trip to European capitals, all at taxpayers’ expense. He will be seeking pats on the back and accolades from world leaders.

How genuine those pats on the back and accolades will be can be the subject only of conjecture. Though it will take the historians many years to truly evaluate the totality of the damage done by the George W. Bush-Dick Cheney years, we can begin to assess the impact now.

One thing is for sure: America will feel the negative effects of the Bush-Cheney years for generations to come. To assess some of the damage that has occurred in the past 7 1/2 years, look at a few facts:

• We are involved in two wars far from our borders.

• Under the Bush-Cheney administration, the national debt has increased by more than 60 percent .

• An energy policy conjured up behind closed doors is evident at the gas pumps and has put a strain on everyone who has to work for a living.

• The administration’s foreign policy has strained our nation’s relationship with the rest of the world.

From an academic point of view, these are big problems, maybe insurmountable problems, but they are only the tip of the iceberg when viewed in the totality of this administration’s effect on the future of our once great nation.
