Letter to the editor:

This Democratic race isn’t over

Thu, May 15, 2008 (2:04 a.m.)

I didn’t send a thank you letter to Brian Greenspun for standing up for Hillary Clinton in his Sunday column because I knew that someone — in this case, Bill DiBenedetto in his Wednesday letter — would say that Mr. Greenspun has it wrong.

Well, Mr. DiBenedetto and other Barack Obama supporters, please know I am not ready to call the Democratic race for our presidential nominee over yet. I, like so many others, am not ready to fall in line behind Obama.

Just because I am a lifelong Democrat doesn’t mean I can support Obama. He hasn’t won me over yet. I haven’t been impressed with his rhetoric and slick speeches. I am worried about his lack of leadership experience. To me, he doesn’t walk his talk.

No, the race isn’t over yet. West Virginia proved that. The voters there didn’t just fall in line behind the so-called winner and neither will I. Obama and his supporters need to reach out to the Clinton supporters. Show us what you see in him that we don’t.

And being nasty, by calling for Hillary to quit, isn’t going to do it. It will be a hard pill to swallow to find myself stuck between John McCain, with another four years of failed Bush Republican politics, and risking our country in the hands of an unproven smooth talker such as Obama and those who don’t respect everyone’s voice in the process.
