Nevada has raked in more than $27 million because of a tax amnesty program that allows businesses to pay back taxes without penalties or interest.

The program took effect July 1. During a special legislative session in June, lawmakers allocated $4 million from the program to help balance the state budget, although the program has taken in more than $27.3 million.

“This program has far surpassed any expectations we had for it,” Gov. Jim Gibbons said in a statement. “With this strong show of willingness by taxpayers to come forward, I asked the Nevada Tax Commission to extend the emergency regulations to the full 120 days available by law.”
