Canyon Springs will have its third head football coach in three years next fall.

Chris Littmann resigned Thursday as the Pioneers coach after one year on the job.

"We have a ton of talent coming back and I'm not the right coach to lead them," Littmann said.

Littmann was the school's offensive line coach in 2007 after moving to Southern Nevada from Wisconsin. He was promoted to head coach after Matt Jenkins left to coach first-year Desert Oasis last spring.

Canyon Springs reached the Sunrise Regional semifinals in 2007, but had several underclassman in key positions this fall in finishing 1-8 overall and in last place of the Northeast Division they won the previous year.

Those underclassman, Littmann said, have the potential to make a playoff run next fall.

Littmann had several talks with players and their parents — all of whom urged him to stay, he said — but decided the best thing for the program would be a new coach.

"It's not that I don't have the experience. I've been coaching varsity football for eight years," he said. "They just need someone different to put them over the top."

Littmann plans to stay involved in high school football. He said he has already been offered two assistant positions at other schools.

Canyon Springs will be the fourth school with a new coach next fall. Bishop Gorman's Bob Altshuler was released last week, Cheyenne's Charles Anthony was removed in the beginning of January and Chaparral's Fernando Carmona stepped down at the end of the season.

Donnie Davis, formerly an assistant at Mojave, was hired at Chaparral. The other two positions are still open.

The large-school classification in Southern Nevada had 12 coaching changes last year.
