Sights Unseen

Our favorite pictures that didn’t run this year

Steve Marcus

THE KING, DEC. 5: Michael Jordan, an Elvis Presley impersonator, watches the O.J. Simpson sentencing on a video monitor with other spectators in an overflow viewing room at the Clark County Regional Justice Center. Elvis impersonators are always worth a photo, and Jordan’s appearance at the O.J. trial was a real surprise. I like to say that we could run Elvis in the paper every day and the readers wouldn’t get tired of it. So far, though, no one has decided to try the experiment.

People in Las Vegas dress funny.

Sometimes they have to. Many hotel and casino jobs require a uniform of some sort, and some of those are as entertaining as the shows. It’s easy to stop noticing what people are wearing. Then you peruse a year’s worth of images and a certain theme starts to emerge.

The costume is part of the “fabric” of Las Vegas, and a part of the culture that you just can’t ignore.
