Gibbons overseas, but Defense Department mum

Thu, Jul 16, 2009 (11:43 a.m.)

CARSON CITY – Gov. Jim Gibbons has left Nevada for an overseas trip but his destination is being kept hush-hush.

Gail Powell, interim press secretary for the governor, confirmed Gibbons has left the state but said the Defense Department has asked that details of his trip not be made public.

Powell would not reveal how long the governor intends to be gone or where he is going.

Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki has been notified of the governor’s absence, Powell said. A spokeswoman for Krolicki said the lieutenant governor is acting governor starting mid-morning today until mid-afternoon July 23.

Gibbons’ absence means that for the first time in memory a governor will miss the annual Wolf Pack dinner at the governor’s mansion to raise money for the athletic programs at the University of Nevada Reno.

The dinner is set for Friday night and Gibbons’ Chief of Staff Robin Reedy, not Krolicki, will attend in his place.
