Embarq to become CenturyLink after deal

Wed, Jun 3, 2009 (4:50 p.m.)

Embarq will get a new name and logo when its $11.6 billion sale to CenturyTel, which should be finalized later this month, is completed.

CenturyLink will be the name of the combined company formed by Louisiana-based CenturyTel and Embarq, based in Overland Park, Kan.

Embarq, is the primary residential phone service provider in the Las Vegas Valley and also offers high-speed data and wireless services in the area.

"Our new brand name was selected because our customers and employees told us it reflected a company that is forward-looking and committed to linking the country together," Glen F. Post III, who will be chief executive officer of CenturyLink, said in a statement.

In May 2006, Sprint Nextel completed a spin-off of Embarq, which previously operated as a local communications branch of the parent company.

Embarq operates in 18 states and is in the Fortune 500 list of America's largest corporations.

CenturyTel provides communications, high-speed Internet and entertainment services in small-to-mid-size cities through its broadband and fiber transport networks.

The new company will retain the New York Stock Exchange symbol CTL currently used by CenturyTel.
