Students at The Meadows School raise money for Make-A-Wish

Wed, Mar 4, 2009 (6:59 p.m.)

Senior students at The Meadows School will use the movie "Wall-E" as an educational tool for the lower-school students at their annual Make-A-Wish fundraiser.

The event, from 3 to 8 p.m. on Friday at the school, 8601 Scholar Lane, gets children involved in mentoring others and teaches them fiscal responsibility, said Jan Rowell, event coordinator and school teacher.

"Last year, we raised more than $10,000 in two movie nights, so this year we hope to raise as much," she said.

Parents donate $20 or more for their child to attend the event. The school hosts two movie night fundraisers each year.

The upper-school students plan and coordinate activities for the younger students that correspond with the movie, Rowell said.

The event will require about 35 upper-school students volunteering to mentor more than 130 younger students. All accounting for the event is done by the volunteers.

"It's a great opportunity for the upper-school students to learn those (money-managing) skills," Rowell said.
