Café Rio Mexican Grill opened its fifth valley location on Wednesday by giving back to the community and asking its customers to do the same.

The restaurant on Blue Diamond Road will be giving away a free meal to every 25th customer through Christmas. In turn, he or she is asked to give a donation to the Children's Miracle Network of Southern Nevada, which funds a pediatric care unit at St. Rose Dominican Hospitals San Martin Campus in the southwest valley.

Other donations are, of course, encouraged, said Brenda Ricks, Café Rio's director of community relations. The company led by example, handing a check for $2,500 to the network's director, Debi Walsh, at a ribbon-cutting event.

Whenever Café Rio opens a new restaurant, Ricks said, it tries to find a worthwhile charity as a partner.

"We're all about helping the kids. Kids are important," she said. "We want to give back."

The Children's Miracle Network receives no state or federal funding, Walsh said, so the assistance of companies like Café Rio is invaluable. The group helps to fund the full range of medical care -- from surgery and emergency care to regular pediatric services -- at St. Rose, serving about 40,000 children each year.

The network has also helped establish a unit for prematurely born infants, she said, and no one is ever turned away for lack of money. People's donations "impact and save children's lives every day," Walsh added.

As at its other locations, Ricks said Café Rio will be serving quick Mexican food made from scratch. The kitchen has no microwaves and no refrigerators. Tortillas are spun fresh every day, and all the sauces and dressings are made by hand, she said.

The new Café Rio is located at 4830 Blue Diamond Road, near the corner of Decatur Boulevard. It is open from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Thursday; 10:30 a.m. to 10 p.m., Friday and Saturday; and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday.

Other locations are at 5675 Centennial Center Blvd.; 9595 S. Eastern Ave.; 9002 W. Sahara Ave.; and 4680 S. Maryland Parkway.
