LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

An easier way to curb immigration

Sat, Jun 5, 2010 (2:03 a.m.)

There’s been a lot of controversy over illegal immigration and the recent changes in Arizona’s laws. I would like to put forth some ideas.

We could organize a federal operation to round up and deport the 12 million or so illegal immigrants in the country. But the problem has been allowed to grow too large by four administrations for something like this to work.

Rather than chase millions of illegal aliens, we should concentrate on the thousands of companies and people who hire them. E-Verify is an Internet-based system that allows an employer to determine a potential employee’s eligibility to work in the United States.

For most employers, E-Verify is voluntary and limited to determining the employment eligibility of new hires. Currently only federal government contractors and subcontractors are required to use E-Verify (per an executive order signed by President Barack Obama last year).

I would propose making all employers use E-Verify immediately for new hires and, within a year, verify the employment eligibility of all their current employees. Anyone hiring an illegal immigrant without using E-Verify would be fined triple the wages paid to the employee.

Most illegal immigrants are here because of employment opportunities. When you remove that possibility, they will stop coming and many may return to their native countries.
