LETTER TO THE EDITOR:

Merits of utility’s conservation plan are up for debate

Tue, Jun 15, 2010 (2:01 a.m.)

I read with disbelief Alice Rapp’s letter to the editor in Thursday’s paper, headlined “It pays to be on power company’s conservation plan.”

We also have been on the Cool Share program, and have been for three or four years. We have, in that time, had one “reward” check for $17.

We keep the thermostat set at 78 to 80. We have a 2,100-square-foot, well-insulated house. Our bill in May was $87.49, and June’s bill was $150.72 — during exceptionally cool months for this time of year. We have had bills of over $300! Cool Share has certainly not paid off for us.

In addition, the service has been poor. We had to replace our air conditioner recently, so we called the Cool Share number to pick up the box that had been on the old unit. We were told they now put a special thermostat in the house.

We made an appointment to have it done on Wednesday, June 9, between 8 a.m. and noon. No one came and no one called. We called them. They apologized and made an appointment for two days later, on Friday, between 8 and 12. On Thursday they called and cancelled that one, and we made a third appointment for Saturday, between noon and 4 p.m. Again, they were a no-call, no-show. (It turns out they came early, when they were not scheduled, when we were doing errands.)

Why would anyone want to be part of that?
