The Tropicana Las Vegas imploded a small portion of its historic Las Vegas Strip resort during the early morning hours today.
The implosion demolished a wing that contains rooms adjacent to Tropicana Avenue. The rooms were the oldest part of the Tropicana Las Vegas, dating back to 1957.
The implosion occurred about 2:30 a.m. and was heard by residents across the Las Vegas Valley.
A spokeswoman for the Tropicana said the section was removed to make room for a second entrance to the property. Guests will be able to access Nikki Beach pool and nightclub, which is scheduled to open next spring, and a new race and sports book. The implosion also opens up space for additional parking, the spokeswoman said.
The Tropicana Las Vegas is undergoing several rounds of a $180 million makeover. The property has renovated all of its rooms, restaurants, pools and the casino floor.
Before the makeover, the property had remained untouched since 1985.
