Warm and gusty, with highs in upper 80s, for Las Vegas Valley

Forecasters say storm to bring only breezy conditions to Las Vegas area

Mon, Apr 18, 2011 (5:09 a.m.)

The work week will start out with gusty winds, mostly sunny skies and temperatures soaring into the upper 80s in the Las Vegas Valley, according to the National Weather Service.

The breezy conditions for the valley are the result of a storm system that will move across northern Nevada today that will bring a chance of showers over the southern Sierra Nevada Mountains and the southern Great Basin, the weather service said.

Dry conditions and lighter winds are expected Tuesday before the next storm brings gusty winds again Wednesday and Thursday, forecasters said.

Winds today will be from the southwest this afternoon between 12 and 15 mph, gusting to 21 mph, they said.

At 4:56 a.m. today, the temperature at McCarran International Airport was 69 degrees. The normal low for today's date is 54 degrees. The record low was 35 degrees, set in 1963.

Around the valley just before 5 a.m., temperatures were 65 degrees at North Las Vegas Airport, 70 degrees at Nellis Air Force Base and 66 degrees at Henderson Executive Airport.

Temperatures in the valley were to rise today to 72 degrees by 9 a.m., to 81 degrees by noon and reach a high of 87 degrees by 5 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 79 degrees and the record high was 98 degrees, set in 1946.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 86 degrees by 6 p.m., to 77 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 72 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Tuesday's morning low will be 64 degrees and Tuesday's high will climb to 84 degrees, they said.
