Bishop Gorman High's Kline Fielden missed a 40-yard field goal with just seconds left Friday night, giving Florida's Armwood High a narrow 20-17 victory at Fertitta Field in a contest of top-10 national opponents.
Earlier in the quarter, Gorman quarterback Anu Solomon capped a 10-play, 85-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to bring the Gaels within three points. Then, with about 2 minutes left, Solomon led a drive into Armwood territory to put Gorman within field goal range in the closing seconds. But Fielden missed the attempt, giving Gorman its first loss ever in the four-year history of Fertitta Field.
Gorman trailed Armwood 20-10 seconds into the fourth quarter, cutting into its deficit with a 1-yard touchdown run from Shaquille Powell on the first play of the quarter.
Armwood, which led 14-3 at halftime, went on a seven-minute drive to open the second half, converting twice on third down and increasing their lead to 20-3 on a Wade Edwards 4-yard touchdown run.
Gorman surrendered 14 second-quarter points and trailed Armwood 14-3 at halftime, erasing a 3-0 first-quarter lead on a 27-yard field goal from Fielden.
It was all Armwood in the second quarter with quarterback Darryl Richardson throwing a 66-yard touchdown early in the quarter on a third-down play for a 7-3 lead. Armwood added to the lead with a 12-yard scoring run from Edwards 18 seconds before halftime.
Gorman isn't the lone local team in action tonight.
