Mayor Carolyn Goodman taking to a stage with Santa Claus, who ziplined down Fremont Street, can only mean one thing — time to light Las Vegas’ official Christmas tree.
Hundreds gathered Tuesday evening on Fremont Street to watch the lighting of the 50-foot tall tree, which took three days to assemble.
It was Goodman’s first time as mayor lighting the tree.
“I think it’s fabulous. I love the people. I love the show that’s on. I love the (Fremont Street) Experience and I love that Santa came down a zipline,” Goodman, who was elected earlier this year, told Kevin Janison, KSNV-TV meteorologist.
Live performances from the Candy & The Canes followed the ceremony where Goodman helped flip the switch that illuminated the tree and its topper — a glowing Fremont Street sign.
The tree will be on display until Dec. 26 and lit nightly under the 12.5 million lights of the Fremont Street canopy.
John Zeller, director of mall operations for Fremont Street Experience designed and built the tree specifically for Fremont Street.
The tree was lit live on “Good Morning America” in 2009 by Mayor Oscar Goodman as part of a national lighting ceremony.
