Bishop Gorman High senior defensive end and tight end Zach Hutchins talks about the upcoming high school football season.

While teammates Shaquille Powell and Ronnie Stanley grabbed national attention by making their college football decisions over the last four days, Bishop Gorman High senior defensive end Zach Hutchins’ commitment flew relatively under the radar.

Like Powell (Duke) and Stanley (Notre Dame), Hutchins also took an official recruiting trip last weekend in visiting the school he ultimately decided on — San Jose State, according to Gaels’ coach Tony Sanchez.

The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Hutchins was the Southwest Division’s Defensive MVP this fall, finishing with 78 tackles and six sacks. He was a regular on the Gaels’ last three state championship teams.

Hutchins also had a scholarship offer from New Mexico State and interest from a handful of other schools. The San Jose State trip was his lone official visit.

Hutchins was joined on his trip to San Jose State by Gorman teammate Ron Scoggings Jr. Scoggins, who previously visited Fresno State, will be visiting hometown UNLV this weekend.
