Letter to the editor:

Leaders must hold firm in Yucca fight

Thu, Dec 15, 2011 (2:02 a.m.)

I totally agree with Wednesday’s editorial “Taking a stand.” The Nuclear Regulatory Commission’s chairman is being grilled by Congress and other commissioners for his insistence on safety improvements since the Fukushima disaster and his willingness to stop consideration of Yucca Mountain. The Energy Department is being sued by two states for stopping work on Yucca Mountain even though our state opposes the dump and the site is not capable of handling long-term isolation of nuclear waste.

Nevadans in every congressional district oppose this project and elect leaders to support that opposition, regardless of party. There is now the fragile beginning of a win for us. Our officials must hold firm or surely we will lose and go from a recovering economy to a threatened future.

The author is the executive director of the Nevada Nuclear Waste Task Force.
