If a fifth-grader points at a passing bus and tells you she decorated it, she might be telling the truth.
Two lucky students got to see their art plastered on the side of a public bus Thursday. The decorated bus will be traveling valley bus routes for the next year.
The students’ art was selected as part of an anti-graffiti competition sponsored by the Regional Transportation Commission, Metro Police, the Southern Nevada Graffiti Coalition and Vector Media.
Krista Kachnik of John Dooley Elementary School won the first-place prize and Fermin Perez of Ruby Thomas Elementary School won second place in the fourth annual competition.
The 40-foot bus has Kachnick’s art on one side and Perez’s piece on the other side.
The theme for the contest was Fight Graffiti and W.I.N (We Inspire Neighborhoods). A total of 235 entries from 19 elementary schools were submitted in the contest. The RTC picked the top 10 entries, and a winner was selected by an online vote.
The artwork of the other finalists will be displayed on transit shelters and inside buses over the next year.
The other finalists were: Kayleigh Adams of Our Lady of Las Vegas; Desiree Amezcua of Treem Elementary; Lauren Aquino of Our Lady of Las Vegas; Gabriel Barrios of Walter V. Long Elementary School; Skylur Pinkus of Ruby Thomas Elementary School; and Lei Caldejon, Brenda Carrillo and Christopher Lopez, all from Edwards Elementary School.
