NLV swears in new councilwoman; one seat still vacant

Wed, Jul 6, 2011 (9:16 p.m.)

North Las Vegas City Councilwoman Pamela Goynes-Brown was sworn in Wednesday, making her the first black to represent Ward 2.

As assistant principal of Scott Elementary School, Goynes-Brown has served as an administrator for the Clark County School District for six years and as a teacher for 28 years. She says she’s ready to help the council make meaningful adjustments.

“I’m hoping to bring a fresh pair of eyes and positive change to the council,” Goynes-Brown said. “The city needs to prioritize to get back on track.”

As to the vacant Ward 4 seat once filled by Richard Cherchio, the July 19 special election between the former councilman and Wade Wagner will decide who fills the spot.

The City Council voted to hold a special election in Precinct 4306 after one illegal ballot was cast in the general election.

Voting will take place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Sedway Middle School. Early voting will be from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. July 11-15 at the Clark County Election Center.

The city must receive requests for absentee ballots by July 12. The form can be downloaded from the city’s website.
