Letter to the editor:

Grateful to live in this great country

Sat, Nov 19, 2011 (2:02 a.m.)

Next week we’ll celebrate Thanksgiving. People always say it is the day when all of us contemplate our blessings and give thanks. Today, I did just that.

I am thankful that my grandparents came to this country so that their descendants could live in freedom and have the opportunity to thrive. I am thankful for our neighbors, near and far, who strive to make this country the paragon for all and a beacon of light for other countries to emulate.

I am thankful for those who founded this country and especially for those who served to protect it against all enemies, foreign and domestic, and am profoundly grateful to those who were injured or gave their lives to do so. I am thankful that we have the right, not merely the privilege, to worship as we desire and the assurance that such right is granted to all of us, native born, naturalized, immigrants, of whatever religious society to which we belong.

And especially on this occasion, I am thankful that Almighty God has blessed this country, its leaders, educators and citizenry, with an abundance of well-deserved self-pride.
