Palo Verde, Arbor View renew rivalry

So much for a letdown from Bishop Gorman after it started the season with two nationally ranked foes.
The Gaels looked as impressive as ever in its state opener Friday night, shutting down last year’s Southwest Division runner-up Desert Oasis by a 52-0 margin.
“I was kind of nervous, to be honest, because I thought we might come out flat after those two games,” Gorman coach Tony Sanchez said. “But we had a great crowd, really packed the house, and I think that helped us come out sharp.”
Quarterback Anu Solomon threw a 60-yard pass to start the game and the Gaels scored two plays later. Solomon narrowly eclipsed the 200-yard mark in the game. He threw the same number of touchdowns as incompletions — two.
His favorite target on the night was fellow junior Jamir Tillman, who had four catches for 100 yards and a touchdown. Shaquille Powell added about 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns.
Gorman led 42-0 at halftime.
“We put our (second string) in to start the second half,” Sanchez said. “They did a real good job.”
The defensive effort was strong, as even Gorman’s last two state championship teams hadn’t managed to shut out Desert Oasis. Sanchez said senior defensive end Zach Hutchins led the charge.
Hutchins’ cohorts on the line, Zack Singer and Jake Smirk, also made moving the ball difficult for the Diamondbacks.
