For the Faith Lutheran High football team, having to replace virtually every contributor from last year’s squad has been a difficult task.
On Friday night, they were rewarded for their efforts.
The Crusaders erased a three-point second-half deficit against visiting Shadow Ridge, dominating the final quarter and a half for a 29-16 win in the season opener.
“We’re just real, real young. We had a ton of sophomores out there for us tonight,” Faith Lutheran coach Jake Kothe said. “For us to play all of those guys with no varsity experience and to still get a win, that’s great for the kids.”
Faith Lutheran trailed 10-7 midway through the third quarter before scoring 22 unanswered points to put the game out of reach. Shadow Ridge scored its final touchdown in the closing seconds.
Faith Lutheran blew the game open thanks to a pair of interception returns for touchdowns — 32 yards from Brad Pearson and 33 yards from Shawn Balva.
Offensively, quarterback Gine DeGeorge connected with Chris Mays for a 63-yard scoring strike, and Austin Daykin had a 4-yard touchdown run.
