Debating the valley's best kicker

The Centennial High football team’s schedule finally gave them a break Friday night, and the Bulldogs responded with a 44-10 victory against Shadow Ridge for their first win.
Centennial, which reached the Sunset Regional semifinals last year, opened with defeats against Las Vegas, Arbor View and Palo Verde — three of the Southern Nevada’s top five teams. Shadow Ridge, on the other hand, has first-year starters at several positions and is still searching for its first win.
Centennial scored all of its points in the first half, including Deontae Gilkey returning a missed field goal 99 yards for a touchdown. Also, Jacobi Owens added a pair of rushing touchdowns.
Even though Centennial was victorious, coach Leon Evans wasn’t happy with their efforts in the second half. The Bulldogs simply went through the motions — similar to the loss to Las Vegas, when Centennial couldn’t hold a double-digit second half advantage.
“We still didn’t play four quarters,” Evans said. “We still aren’t finishing out games. Our biggest thing is playing a full four quarters. We are satisfied because we didn’t come to play in the second half.”
