Teen tried to run over Metro Police sergeant, authorities say

An 18-year-old man was in custody Friday on a bevy of counts, including attempting to run over a Metro Police officer in a stolen van.

Khiare Taylor, 18, faces charges stemming from incidents that began Monday evening, when he allegedly tried to steal a pizza delivery driver’s car at a Las Vegas apartment complex. In all, the Clark County district attorney’s office Thursday charged Taylor with battery with the use of a deadly weapon, burglary, attempted robbery, robbery and grand larceny auto.

According to a police report, a pizza delivery driver returned to his car Monday evening after making a delivery at an apartment complex in the 4900 block of East Russell Road to find Taylor in the driver’s seat. The delivery driver told police that Taylor demanded the keys. After the two struggled, police said, Taylor escaped and ran toward a nearby trash enclosure.

A witness — the man who ordered the pizza — directed the responding officer, Metro Sgt. D. Webb, toward the trash enclosure, where she encountered Taylor.

According to the police report, Taylor initially complied with Webb’s commands before suddenly running toward Russell Road. Webb returned to her patrol vehicle to give chase.

Meanwhile another witness, who was leaving the complex in his van, saw Taylor running on Russell and gave chase. The witness passed Taylor, stopped the vehicle and tried to apprehend Taylor. A struggle ensued and, as Webb approached in her patrol vehicle Taylor climbed into the running van.

Webb then pulled her vehicle in front of the van in an attempt to block his escape. As Webb tried to get out of her vehicle, Taylor put the van in drive and rammed into the patrol vehicle until he was able to drive off, according to the report.

The patrol vehicle was rendered inoperable. And Webb was taken to University Medical Center, where she was treated for unspecified injuries.

Officers later learned Taylor had crashed the van into another vehicle at Whitney Ranch and Sunset Road in Henderson, then evidently continued driving to the area of Mountain Vista Street and Olympic Avenue in Henderson, where the abandoned van was found crashed into a parked car, the police report said.

Police were able to identify Taylor from identification in his wallet, which he dropped while being chased by the man who ordered the pizza. The man stopped giving chase to pick up the wallet and later turned it over to police, the report said.

Taylor was apprehended after Henderson Police responded to a domestic disturbance involving Taylor at 6:45 p.m. Tuesday near Warm Springs Road and Arroyo Grande. Another person involved in the dispute told a Henderson Police officer that Taylor had come to her apartment after 8 p.m. Monday, “dirty, sweaty, bloody and out of breath,” according to police.

Taylor is in custody without bond at the Clark County Detention Center. His preliminary hearing is scheduled for April 18.
