With an eye toward increasing customers, the Springs Preserve will add a train on rubber wheels beginning in January.
For a fee of “about $3,” which is how Preserve director Julie Wilcox put it, people who already purchase a ticket to get into the Preserve will be able to purchase a ticket to ride the train.
The Las Vegas Valley Water District, which is purchasing the vehicle, on Tuesday morning accepted $50,000 from the city of Las Vegas' Commission for the Las Vegas Centennial to offset the train's $291,000 cost. The Clark County Commission sits as the Las Vegas Valley Water District's board of directors.
Wilcox said the train, which will follow a 1- to 1.5-mile route, will be up and running in January. It will be able to haul 48 people at a time and travel up to 15 mph. She said the train would cart people into the northern portions of the 180-acre Springs Preserve, where the district is also restoring railroad cottages.
