The issue: North Las Vegas Police Department urged the city council at a meeting Wednesday night to support a resolution asking the Legislature to earmark more revenue for police from an already-voter-approved quarter-cent increase in county sales tax. The recession has decreased the police department’s budget by more than $30 million since 2009. The extra revenue would be used to hire more police officers and pay for equipment.
Metro Police Sheriff Al Gillespie is spearheading the resolution, which would impact all police departments in Clark County.
Vote: Approved, 5-0
What It Means: This puts North Las Vegas in favor of the quarter-cent county sales tax increase for police departments in Clark County. The city will add its support when the 2013 Nevada Legislature reviews the resolution. The 77th Nevada Legislative Session begins on Feb. 4.
