Road closure

An influx of visitors to the Mount Charleston area prompted the Nevada Highway Patrol on Monday afternoon to close State Route 156 heading to Lee Canyon.

Trooper Loy Hixson said the road is closed at U.S. 95. Only residents will be permitted to head up the mountain.

Visitors already in the area are being diverted across State Route 158 and back down State Route 157 to U.S. 95 when they leave, he said.

The Highway Patrol closed the road early Monday afternoon after noticing problems related to limited parking at the lodge and campsites in the area, Hixson said.

Parking is banned alongside State Route 156, but officials worried visitors would try to park there anyway, Hixson said.

Troopers expect the closure to last several hours, possibly until sundown, when most visitors begin leaving.

Hixson said it’s not uncommon for NHP to close the road when the number of visitors spikes on holidays.
