The victim of Las Vegas' first homicide of 2012 has been identified as a 59-year-old Las Vegas woman.

The Clark County Coroner's Office reported today that the victim, Rosa Monarrez, died Sunday of a gunshot wound to the neck. Her body was found in a home near Maryland Parkway and Oakey Boulevard, Metro Police said.

Police said David Monarrez, 29, was taken into custody about 2:30 a.m. Monday in connection with the slaying. He was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on a count of murder with a deadly weapon, according to jail records.

Detectives obtained information that the homicide occurred after an altercation between Rosa Monarrez and David Monarrez. But as of 9:30 a.m. today, officials had not released details on how the two were related.

At 5:12 p.m. Sunday, officers responded to a home in the 1000 block of Bracken Avenue, where they found the woman, police said.

Detectives had identified Monarrez as a “person of interest” in the case prior to his arrest. Jail records indicate he is being held without bail, and his first court appearance is scheduled for today.
