Computer error causes delay in unemployment checks

Tue, Jan 10, 2012 (5:24 p.m.)

CARSON CITY — Unemployment checks to some jobless Nevadans will be late because of a computer error.

The state Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation said Tuesday it doesn’t know how many people’s payments will be delayed.

Director Frank Woodbeck said the agency will work overtime until the problem is solved and all benefits are paid.

He said the department receives more calls than usual during the post-holiday season, which is resulting in delays for callers to gain access to the telephone claims system.

Those seeking unemployment payments should file their regular claims on line at nvdetr.org and expressclaim.org.

“We will do everything possible to keep claimants informed of the latest developments in this situation,” Woodbeck said.

The department said it is extending its hours as a result of the glitch and seasonal demands by claimants. All calls received before 5 p.m. will be fielded the same day.
