Letter to the editor:

Driven to war by the greedy few

Wed, Jan 11, 2012 (2:01 a.m.)

A few thousand young Americans died in Iraq for its oil. Now I am hearing more and more about Iran and its oil. How many will die there when we try to give them democracy? What a sad joke this has become.

I live near a freeway, and I see an endless stream of pickup trucks and SUVs. These gas guzzlers go through gasoline like there is no tomorrow. To me, pickups are the ugliest vehicles on the roadways, along with the large boxlike vehicles called SUVs. In my day, we used pickups for hard work and not as pleasure vehicles. I must say the newer SUVs look really stylish and just might get good mileage. When we exhaust all the oil on earth, what will be the next thing we will kill each other over: corn, water or a senseless religion?

As a child and then as a young adult, I thought World War II would wake up mankind to the senseless killing of millions of people. Boy, was I wrong. War is a moneymaker for a few and misery for many.
