Cooler temperatures today for Las Vegas

Cloudy skies moving in for the weekend, says forecaster

Temperatures a bit cooler than normal — climbing only into the mid 50s — are in store for Las Vegas this afternoon, says Kevin Janison, KSNV-TV meteorologist.

"A battle is brewing in Southern Nevada," Janison said.

An area of low pressure is pumping clouds up from the south toward the Las Vegas Valley, he said. And a cold front, moving through from the north, is attempting to push the clouds farther south, he said.

"A secondary cool front will join forces with front number one, and defeat the clouds, send them packing and export them to Arizona," he said.

"That will leave Thursday clear and cooler with a few breezes in the morning. We’ll have a low of 39 degrees, followed by a high of 56 degrees, making today January’s coolest day so far," he said. "That low off the California coast is expected to move inland over the weekend, so if you’re a cloud connoisseur, Sunday will be your day."

According to the National Weather Service, this morning’s low at McCarran International Airport was expected to be 39 degrees, which is the normal low for today's date. The record low was 14 degrees, set in 1963.

Temperatures at McCarran were to rise today to 46 degrees by 9 a.m., to 54 degrees by noon and reach a high of 56 degrees by 2 p.m., forecasters said. The normal high for today's date is 58 degrees and the record high was 71 degrees, set in 1986 and 1980.

Temperatures are expected to drop to 51 degrees by 6 p.m., to 45 degrees by 9 p.m. and to 41 degrees by midnight, forecasters said.

Friday's morning low will be 36 degrees and Friday's high will climb to 58 degrees, they said.
