An 18-year-old man suffered smoke inhalation Thursday trying to put out a house fire started by a candle, Las Vegas Fire and Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.

The blaze displaced a family of three and killed a family dog, fire officials said. The fire caused an estimated $80,000 damage, officials said.

Firefighters received multiple emergency calls about 2:30 p.m. of a fire in the 500 block of South Mallard Street, Szymanski said. It took fire crews about 10 minutes to put out the fire, he said.

The teen, who tried to douse the fire started by a candle in a rear bedroom, was taken to a University Medical Center and treated for smoke inhalation, Szymanski said.

Besides the dog that was killed, another was injured and two other pets were missing, Szymanski said.
