Desert Pines student identified as victim of fatal shooting

The Clark County Coroner’s Office has identified a teen who died amid shooting early Sunday at a house party in the northeast valley.

Betty Jean Pinkney, 17, died from a gunshot wound to the chest, the coroner said. Her death was ruled a homicide.

School officials said Pinkney was a senior at Desert Pines High School.

The shooting happened shortly before 1 a.m. Sunday at a home in the 4200 block of Tattersall Place, near Alexander Road and Lamb Boulevard. Police said several people called dispatch to report shots had been fired.

Officers arrived to find Pinkney dead and another female wounded, police said.

Homicide detectives’ initial investigation indicates an argument between two males at the party preceded the shooting, police said. Multiple gunshots were fired during the exchange, police said.

It appears the two victims were not involved in the altercation and were not the intended targets of the shooting, police said.

Homicide investigators urge anyone with information to call Metro’s homicide section at (702) 828-3521. To remain anonymous, contact Crime Stoppers at (702) 385-5555.
