Panel dismisses disciplinary case against attorney

A Nevada Bar Association panel has decided not to impose any discipline on a Las Vegas lawyer implicated in an $110,000 deceptive trade scam.

The Southern Nevada Disciplinary Board, acting on the recommendation of a screening panel, dismissed the case of Jocelyne Uy with prejudice, meaning the case is dead and cannot be filed again.

The Nevada Supreme Court in November referred the case of Uy to the Southern Nevada Disciplinary Board to determine what, if any, disciplinary action should be imposed.

Uy, admitted to practice law in 2005 in Nevada, is now chairwoman of the math department at Adelson School. She said she has been a teacher, not a lawyer.

She pleaded no contest to a misdemeanor count of engaging in a deceptive trade practice and reported the offense to the bar association.

Court records say she acted as a principal or manager of Theater Management group and solicited Michael Scott Leslie to invest. Uy maintains it was her partner Brian Howie who misrepresented the company.

The complaint in Justice Court in Las Vegas said Uy did not form TMC Harmon and did not keep records of the investment, income and expenses.

As part of the plea agreement, she has agreed to pay $110,000 in restitution to Leslie. And this month she repaid the Secretary of State's office $6,316 for the cost of its investigation.
