Letter to the editor:

It was what Paterno didn’t do

Tue, Jan 24, 2012 (2:02 a.m.)

The saddest and most heartbreaking story in the history of modern sports has to be that of Joe Paterno.

After a stellar career at Penn State University for 61 years, 46 years as its football coach, Paterno died under a cloud of ignominy. The quote that comes to mind from Act 3, Scene 2 of William Shakespeare’s “Julius Caesar”: Mark Antony says, “The evil that men do lives after them. The good is oft interred with their bones.”

In Paterno’s case, it is not the evil he did but the evil that a coach on his staff had allegedly done and Paterno didn’t do enough about. It will forever overshadow Paterno’s life and legacy.
