Rainstorm blows into Las Vegas area

Sat, Mar 17, 2012 (5:32 p.m.)

Irish eyes are crying on the Las Vegas Valley, and the rain is expected to continue into Sunday.

Showers began late afternoon Saturday - St. Patrick's Day.

Preceding the showers were wind gusts, as high as 42 mph in downtown Henderson, according to KSNV-TV Channel 3 forecaster Jerry Brown. Elsewhere in the valley, winds were registering from 23 to 35 mph Saturday evening.

Along with the wet, windy weather, temperatures continued to drop. After a high temperature of 66 degrees Saturday in Las Vegas, the mercury had dropped to 54 degrees by 5 p.m. and was expected to hit an overnight low of 46.

Sunday's high is expected to top out at 54 degrees, with rain ending early in the day.

The valley remains under a wind advisory tonight, with showers - and possibly thunderstorms - continuing. The precipitation, combined with lower temperatures in higher elevations, prompted a winter storm advisory for Mount Charleston, Brown said.

Spring officially begins at 10:14 p.m. Monday, Brown noted.
