Former Legacy aide lands job at Bonanza

Fri, Mar 30, 2012 (2:22 p.m.)

Chad Dobar was hired this week as the new Bonanza High football coach.

Dobar, who spent the last four years on staff at Legacy High, inherits a program that went 7-3 in 2011 and advanced to the Sunset Regional quarterfinals. He replaced Shawn Durpis, who left to coach at Damonte Ranch High in Reno.

Dobar was the defensive coordinator at Legacy in 2010 when the Longhorns won the Northwest Division and advanced to the Sunset semifinals. They limited perennial power Palo Verde to six points en route to capturing the league crown.

“Bonanza has a lot of skilled players over there. They are on the cusp of going over the edge, and I feel I can take them there,” he said.

Dobar got his coaching start at Cimarron-Memorial. Like Cimarron, his Bonanza team will take pride in running the football and being aggressive.

“I’m kind of old-fashion (in my approach),” Dobar said. “My teams will have the ground-and-pound approach. You won’t want to play us in the fourth quarter.”
