Shooting
SWAT officers shot and killed an armed fugitive after a two-hour standoff near Eastern Avenue and St. Rose Parkway early this morning, Henderson Police said.
Police received a report about 11:30 p.m. Tuesday from a woman who said her boyfriend had a gun and had assaulted her, Henderson Police spokesman Keith Paul said. When police located the man, he fled until he was trapped against a fence surrounding a concrete wash, police said.
That’s when he pulled out a gun, Paul said.
Paul said the 36-year-old man, who police later discovered was wanted on a Nevada warrant for violating probation, pointed the weapon at himself and made suicidal threats. SWAT officers arrived and tried to persuade him to surrender. At 1:50 a.m., he turned the gun away from himself and pointed it at officers, Paul said.
Police shot the man, who was pronounced dead after paramedics tried to resuscitate him in a nearby parking lot.
Three officers have been placed on paid administrative leave while the shooting is investigated. Officer Tyler Bailey has worked for Henderson Police since 2007; Officer Justin Dera has worked for Henderson Police since 2002; and Officer Jesse Lujan has worked for Henderson Police since 1997.
Paul said the man was a registered felon, convicted of burglary and prison escape in California and larceny from a person in Nevada.
