August is here, and with it comes a slate of new summer events.
Start off your month right this weekend with plenty of live music offerings from touring acts and locals alike — or maybe just kick back with a good, old-fashioned Tupperware party.
Here’s a look at our weekend best bets:
-
Thursday: Flaming Lips at House of Blues
Psychedelic alt-rockers the Flaming Lips return to Las Vegas as part of Bud Light’s 50/50/1 event, where 50 bands will play in 50 states simultaneously on the same night. No word yet on whether frontman Wayne Coyne’s plastic bubble will make an appearance. The show at House of Blues in Mandalay Bay starts at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40 to $60.
-
Friday: “Sharknado” at Regal Village Square and Colonnade
If you missed this instant camp classic when it aired on Syfy last month — or if you just want to re-live the experience on the big screen — Regal Village Square and Colonnade will be screening the tale of a tornado full of sharks for a one-night-only theatrical release. The show starts at midnight and costs $12.50.
-
Friday: First Friday featuring antARTica and Life Is Beautiful showcase at Casino Center and Charleston
Cool down Friday night at the August edition of downtown’s monthly street festival, where organizers will put on an interactive “antARTica” experience complete with glaciers, penguins and a custom-built aquarium photo booth built by the cast of Animal Planet’s “Tanked.”
Friday night also marks the final — and largest — Life Is Beautiful festival local music showcase, where 25 bands will play on five stages to vie for slots in October’s festival lineup. Admission to all stages is free. The show starts at 6 p.m.
-
Saturday - Sunday: Hall & Oates at the Joint
Get ready, Maneaters: Chart-topping pop rock favorites Daryl Hall and John Oates return to the Joint at the Hard Rock Hotel for two nights of their signature high-energy live shows. Fans can expect to hear classics like “Out of Touch” and “Private Eyes,” as well as original covers. Shows get underway at 9 p.m. Tickets start at $45.
-
Sunday: Ultimate Dodgeball Championship Qualifier at Sky Zone
This ain’t your schoolyard dodgeball: Local teams go head-to-head this weekend on Sky Zone’s indoor trampoline courses, where competitors will dip, dodge, duck and fly to battle it out for a spot in September’s Championship Tournament and a $20,000 grand prize. The event kicks off at 10 a.m. and is free for spectators.
-
Friday: Kathy Griffin at the Mirage
Las Vegas favorite Kathy Griffin returns this weekend, bringing her trademark sass and celebrity gossip to Terry Fator Theater at the Mirage. The show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets to see the two-time Emmy winner are $59.99 to $79.99 and can be purchased through Ticketmaster and Mirage box office.
-
Thursday - Sunday: Dixie’s Tupperware Party at Smith Center
Fast-talking Tupperware queen Dixie Longate brings her collection of plastic containers to Smith Center’s Troesh Studio Theater this weekend to regale audiences with outrageous stories and dish on the latest products and their many alternative uses. Come ready to laugh — and with an open mind. Tickets are $33 to $39. Shows are today and Friday at 7 p.m., Saturday at 3 and 7 p.m. and Sunday at 3 p.m.
