Reno police sergeant demoted after selling gun to mentally ill teen

Fri, Aug 2, 2013 (3:36 p.m.)

A Reno police sergeant who sold a gun to a mentally ill 19-year-old man has been demoted to officer.

The Reno Gazette-Journal reports Deputy Police Chief Tom Robinson confirmed the demotion of Laura Conklin on Friday.

Robinson adds that the department's internal investigation into the July gun sale is still on-going.

A judge earlier had adjudicated the young man as mentally incompetent to care for himself, making it illegal for him to have a weapon.

Conklin's lawyer Thomas Viloria tells the newspaper that Conklin was promoted to sergeant on Aug. 10 of last year. The promotion comes with a one-year probationary period and she was awaiting final confirmation.

Viloria says Conklin was told Wednesday that she was not confirmed, though no reason was provided.
