Gov. Brian Sandoval confirmed Friday that he will meet with Energy Secretary Ernest Moniz on Aug. 13 to discuss shipments of radioactive waste canisters for burial at the Nevada National Security Site.
Sandoval's press secretary, Mary-Sarah Kinner, would not disclose the location of the meeting for “security reasons,” but it is expected to be in Las Vegas, where Moniz is scheduled to be that day for the National Clean Energy Summit.
Sandoval said last month he had a “frank and blunt conversation” with the energy secretary and they agreed to disagree on several points. Sandoval doesn’t want the radioactive waste to be buried at the site near Las Vegas.
The canisters contain fissionable Uranium 233 and Uranium 235 that the Energy Department says is low-level radioactive material. Sandoval says it is not low level and is unsafe for burial.
The material is coming from Oak Ridge, Tenn., for burial about 40 feet deep in the desert landfill.
Sandoval, who turns 50 on Monday, will be on vacation of next week.
