An off-duty Metro Police detective shot and wounded a man who crawled into his vehicle Sunday night outside the Excalibur, authorities said.

Just after 9 p.m., the detective and his wife were parked in a loading zone outside the casino when the man climbed into the driver’s side of the detective’s personal vehicle, Metro Capt. Brett Primas said.

The detective ordered the man out of the vehicle multiple times and identified himself as a police officer, but the intruder did not get out, Primas said.

After the intruder lowered his hands out of view toward his waist, the detective drew his gun and shot the man in the wrist, Primas said.

The man ran from the car but was stopped by security guards at the front of the hotel, given first aid and transported to University Medical Center. His injuries did not appear life-threatening, officials said.

The detective and his wife were visiting the Excalibur to drop off packages for family and friends staying at the hotel, Primas said.

A Metro spokesman said the detective had been placed on routine paid administrative leave while the investigation continued. This is the 13th Metro officer-involved shooting of the year.
