Apartment fire
Las Vegas fire investigators are still searching for the cause of an apartment complex fire Sunday that displaced 70 people and caused more than $350,000 damage in what was described as the city’s largest blaze of the year.
The fire, which damaged an apartment complex on North 28th Street, near Eastern Avenue and U.S. 95, also resulted in minor injuries to two residents, Las Vegas Fire & Rescue spokesman Tim Szymanski said.
More than 90 firefighters and 50 support vehicles responded to the fire, he said.
Many of the 70 residents forced to evacuate Sunday morning might not be able to return home because of irreparable damage to their apartments, he said.
The fire was called in just before 7 a.m. Sunday and was extinguished about an hour later, Szymanski said.
A couple discovered the fire near the front door of their second-floor apartment after a smoke alarm sounded and escaped by jumping from a window, Szymanski said. Both suffered minor injuries, he said.
Residents displaced by the fire were being assisted by the American Red Cross of Southern Nevada, which was providing food and other essentials for the 24 families affected by the fire, spokeswoman La’Shana Smith said. Temporary living arrangements have been set up in other apartments in the complex or with relatives, she said.
