UNLV senior guard Anthony Marshall has accepted an invitation to play in the Portsmouth Invitational from April 10-13 in Virginia, Rebels coach Dave Rice said Friday.
The event is a chance for college seniors who aren’t NBA locks to play a few games in front of several scouts. Last year, UNLV’s Chace Stanback and Oscar Bellfield both played in the event. Bellfield would go on to spend time in the New York Knicks’ training camp and their NBA Developmental League team, the Erie BayHawks, until he was dropped in December. Coincidentally, the BayHawks picked up Stanback earlier this month.
Marshall is one of 64 players invited to the tournament. The rosters aren’t announced until April 5, but it’s very possible he could be joined by fellow local high school grads Pierre Jackson (Desert Pines/Baylor) and Elijah Johnson (Cheyenne/Kansas).
So far there are only five players confirmed for the event: Mark Lyons (Arizona), Travis Releford (Kansas), Jordan Hulls (Indiana), Stan Okoye (VMI) and Maurice Kemp (East Carolina).
Marshall, who this season was second-team all-Mountain West and named to the all-defensive team, averaged 10.4 points and 4.1 rebounds per game with a 2.1 assist-to-turnover ratio. For his career, Marshall averaged 9.4 points, 4 rebounds and 3.8 assists per game.
