las vegas 51s:

51s score winning run in ninth inning against Round Rock

Tue, May 7, 2013 (10:18 p.m.)

Pinch runner Brian Bixler scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth inning Tuesday for the Las Vegas 51s in a 3-2 victory against visiting Round Rock in the first game of a four-game Pacific Coast League series at Cashman Field.

The 51s led 2-1 entering the ninth inning, but Round Rock evened the score at two when Chris McGuiness doubled and scored on a Robinson Chirinos single.

Las Vegas won the game in the bottom half of the inning.

Reese Havens opened the frame with an infield single and moved to second on Josh Satin’s groundout. Bixler entered to run for Havens, scoring the game-winner when Chirinos, the Round Rock catcher, couldn’t control the third strike when Zach Lutz struck out. Chirinos threw to first to complete the strikeout and Bixler raced home with the winning run.

Satin hit his fifth home run of the year in the first inning to give Las Vegas an early 1-0 lead. The 51s scored again in the eighth on an RBI single from Juan Centeno.

Las Vegas starter Collin McHugh was brilliant in pitching seven scoreless innings with five strikeouts but didn’t earn the victory when the 51s squandered the lead late.

The series continues at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
