The Greenspun Media Group, which publishes the Las Vegas Sun, Las Vegas Weekly, VEGAS INC and Las Vegas Magazine, was recognized Saturday as the top media organization in the state by the Nevada Press Association.

At the organization’s annual awards presentation, the publications garnered 96 awards — including 46 first-place journalism honors, more than any other media company in Nevada.

Stephens Media, publisher of the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Pahrump Valley Times, View Neighborhood Newspapers and Luxury Magazine, was the second-most-honored organization, with 80 total awards, including 28 first places.

The Weekly and VEGAS INC were named best overall publication in their categories — urban weeklies and community weeklies, respectively. The award is based on editorial and advertising criteria; the Sun does not publish advertising.

The Sun received the statewide award for community service for its exploration of the extent and toll of sex trafficking in Las Vegas, a package of stories reported and written by J. Patrick Coolican, Jackie Valley, Tovin Lapan and David McGrath Schwartz.

The Arizona Newspapers Association, which judged the competition, honored Reno Gazette-Journal reporter Martha Bellisle for story of the year, an investigation into the unraveling of the relationship between the Nevada U.S. Attorney’s Office and local agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives.

Three Greenspun journalists won top individual awards. Judges named Sun Politics Editor Anjeanette Damon Nevada’s outstanding journalist of the year for urban daily newspapers, citing her gumption, fearlessness and nimble writing on deadline. The judges focused on Damon’s analysis of why Apple moved one of its operations to Nevada, the state’s role in the 2012 presidential election and political campaign advertising.

The judges commented, “Tax law? Yawn? Not so fast. Damon’s ability to dive into the Apple tax-breaks saga (seemingly long before national outlets like The New York Times were able to do the same) shows obvious gumption and willingness to go after a story of local and widespread importance. But to do so — with plenty of background and detail — practically on deadline is truly impressive. Switching gears, Damon’s coverage of Nevada’s jump to ‘presidential swing state’ status does what it would seem every newsroom would want from the national story of all national stories: a local angle. Damon jumps on this angle on election night itself, to boot. ‘Line of Attack’ (essentially an election truth-meter) is well constructed and shows not only range, but fearlessness. Well done all around.”

Among urban weekly publications, entertainment columnist John “Kats” Katsilometes was named outstanding journalist, and Andrea Domanick was named journalist of merit, an award bestowed on writers with less than five years of professional experience.

Websites operated by the Sun, the Weekly and VEGAS INC were named best in the state in their classes.

“The honors bestowed on our journalists are especially gratifying because they are the conclusions of our peers — other professionals in the field who understand what great journalism is,” said Brian Greenspun, editor and publisher of the Las Vegas Sun. “The beneficiaries are Nevadans, because our caliber of journalism advances the cause of democracy.”

“I’m immensely proud of the very talented journalists who work in our GMG newsroom.”

Most of the awards are divided among five classes: Class I, urban daily newspapers with circulation of 15,000 or more; Class II, intermediate newspapers, printed more than once a week with circulation of less than 15,000; Class III, community newspapers printed weekly or monthly with circulation of less than 10,000; Class IV, urban weekly newspapers printed weekly with circulation of 10,000 or more; and magazines.
