Las Vegas High incoming senior Devon Colley isn’t concerned with leading Wildcats basketball team in scoring this winter.
The point guard would rather lead them in assists, knowing his role in organizing the offense is crucial in their plans to make a push for the state championship.
Today, the 6-foot-1 Colley verbally committed to the University of New Orleans, picking the Southland Conference school over offers from Idaho, Southern Utah, Northern Colorado and others.
By declaring early, more than two months before national signing day, Colley can now shift his attention to the high school season.
“It was a like a huge weight was lifted off me,” Colley said. “Now I can focus on trying to achieve the goal me and my teammates have to win a state championship.”
Colley, who averaged nine points, 6.5 assists and four rebounds per game as a junior, is one of four returners for Las Vegas with interest from colleges. Ray Smith, a five-star recruit verbally committed to Arizona, is rehabbing a knee injury and won’t be available until the end of the season, if at all.
Without Smith, Colley will be a formidable replacement in leading the team. It will be his time to shine. Last season, Las Vegas led Canyon Springs in the second half of the Sunrise Regional championship game before losing.
“The way it ended last year, that’s enough motivation. That’s what fuels me,” Colley said.
Colley committed to New Orleans without taking a recruiting trip. He plans to visit in early September.
“It just felt right with the coaching staff,” he said. “They were always calling me and making me feel welcome. It felt like the right place to be at.”
Verbal commitments are non-binding until national signing day in early November.
