letter to the editor:

Columnist off-base about disease

Wed, Aug 27, 2014 (2:01 a.m.)

Michael Hiltzik, columnist for the Los Angeles Times, obviously has not had a loved one die of amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. His Saturday column about the ice bucket challenge is a travesty. He implies that since ALS is a rare disease, far outstripped by many other conditions, it does not warrant so much attention and money.

I have never heard of Michael Hiltzik, but the words ALS caught my attention, and that is the point. To even suggest that ALS is not as important as others diseases requiring research funding is so wrong, I cannot believe he had the nerve to write it.

Those who could donate have, and those who could not have brought attention to an important cause.

I guess Michael Hiltzik also is a fad, because I will probably not remember his name or read his column anymore.
