Letter to the editor:

Work together to decrease deaths

Tue, Dec 2, 2014 (2 a.m.)

It is with a growing sense of unease that I continue to read stories about pedestrians being struck by a vehicle and suffering either serious injury or death. An act as simple as walking down the street should not leave pedestrians in fear for their lives, nor should drivers fear the life-changing feeling of running a pedestrian down.

The answer to this problem is simple, yet it will take the cooperation of all Las Vegans to accomplish. If pedestrians and drivers follow established traffic laws, there will be fewer injuries and fatalities.

I can drive down the road and witness pedestrians crossing the road outside of a crosswalk — normally less than 20 feet away from that crosswalk. I see little regard for their own safety when they are crossing outside of a crosswalk, wearing dark clothing at night. The residents of Las Vegas need to work together to decrease the amount of preventable deaths in the valley.
