Metro Police will hold a graduation ceremony Wednesday for its 15th Hispanic Citizens Academy class, which aims to teach Spanish-speaking Las Vegans about crime and general police operations.
The minority outreach program, held twice a year, was created in 2007 by now-retired Lt. George Castro. Three-hour academy classes are held Wednesday evenings and cover a range of topics including gangs, drugs and domestic violence.
Metro officers also offer free child care for kids 5 to 12 years old. The academy is for those ages 18 and older.
Wednesday evening's graduation, which isn't open to the public, will be held at Metro headquarters.
The class is a spinoff of Metro's regular English-language police academy, one of the department's most popular community outreach programs that has a waiting list to join.
